![]() Ana harbors a secret longing to be a writer. The Book of Longings tells the story of Ana: daughter of Herod Antipas’s head scribe, sister of Judas Iscariot-and wife of Jesus of Nazareth. Both of these types of preconceptions can be seen in the critical reviews of Sue Monk Kidd’s new novel. After all, if Jesus came to destabilize the familiar, perhaps that’s what literature about Jesus should do as well. Others expect the novel to disturb, challenge, and subvert their presumptions. ![]() Some wish to live more deeply within the historical world of the Bible while remaining inside familiar narrative and theological lines (whatever those might be). ![]() Readers of biblical historical fiction carry vastly different expectations-often unknowingly-when it comes to the author’s responsibility to the biblical text. ![]()

I compared it to a later recording by Solti, which runs to a more leisurely 76 and three-quarter minutes. This was achieved both by having some quite lengthy sides - the label claims 33 minutes and 32 minutes duration, with a split partway through the third movement - and by Horenstein conducting the work at a fair old lick. Horenstein's Beethoven Nine is that rarest of things - a recording of the symphony which fitted onto a single LP, rather than the more common three sides. Sounding fabulous in this new 32-bit XR transfer and remastering Horenstein's classic 1956 recording of the Choral Symphony ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The strength of family and love from people who have integrity and good character shines brightly throughout this novel. Cute, eh? She was great for Tory and so was her father. I loved the young girl in the story, Precious Lord. Mattison did an excellent job showing how teens can still keep their heart right in the midst of temptation and how even the best kids can get hit with the worst knocks if they're in the wrong place at the wrong time or hook up with the wrong people. The more naive you are, the harder it is to stay clean. This story clearly shows the slippery slope that one must travel when fame and recognition comes your way. It doesn't hurt that the author has credibility from his own experiences in life either. I think that is the main reason that Unsigned Hype will appeal to urban youth. If you are street smart you know what the author means. ![]() Obviously "keeping it real" doesn't need to include a bunch of trash because a lot can be said without being said. And not because it was full of junk, but because it felt real to me. I didn't want to do anything except read this book. For me the sign of a truly great novel is when the story transports you to a world different than your own. Unsigned Hype pulled me into the head of a young man who attends an inner city school and is quickly getting recognition for his musical talent. ![]() ![]() Still, in the scenes where he was an active participant, he appeared gentle and caring like one other review mentioned "a true gentleman" to Leah. When it comes to the romance it was ok my biggest issue with Leah and Andrew’s story was how the hero seemed to be almost removed from the narration (most of the book is written from heroine’s point of view), making him quite one-dimensional. I think there’s a lot of potential to use that world and tell a lot of great stories. Lucia Omonobi created an unique and interesting universe: not that different from our own, but enough to be fresh and original.Īlthough sometimes descriptions of the environment overshadowed the romance, I quite enjoyed it. I’m not one to gravitate towards (fantasy) historical fiction, but this story drew me in. The strongest point of the book was defiantly the world building. Wind of Fate, albeit flawed, offers an engaging story set against the backdrop of an unique universe created by the author.Īndrew and Leah’s story is quite tumulus one there’s a healthy dose of angst and quite brutal (and based on historic accounts) depictions of relocating process, with romance sprinkle somewhere in between. Thank you Ms Omonobi for reaching out to me. ![]() ![]() Disclosure: Book provided by the author for an honest review. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The corruption of Chancery finds its analogue and result in Tom-all-Alone’s, aptly named after the first suitor in the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. Whilst Esther’s past tense narrative seems to establish a comfortable distance between the reader and the suffering within the novel, the shift to present tense in the third person narrative reminds us that street urchins like Jo remain unacknowledged, yet “dying thus around us every day” (734). Leavis observed, Dickens is concerned not only with a stagnating legal process, but with how “the laws of human nature”, distort human relationships. Chancery becomes a microcosm for the iniquities being propagated at an institutional level and repeated by individuals. The metaphor of Chancery having its “decaying houses and its blighted lands in every shire” (15) demonstrates how the corruption and inefficiency working at an institutional level is propagated at every other level of society. Dickens destabilises the Victorian dichotomy between the public and private through the double narrative, as moral corruption transcends class divisions in the novel and spreads from the lowest to the highest levels of society. The Court of Chancery acts as a centripetal force, drawing characters inexorably into its interminable legal process. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her work is emotional, powerful, and will shake a person's foundations.
